Design and Looks
The BlackBerry Curve stands at 109x60x13.5 mm and weighs in about 110g. The phone is all plastic and the design makes it a nice feel in the pocket. The phone features a good 2.4inch display which actually packs in more pixels. The screen is able to display more colors and increased sharpness.
The layout of controls includes the two call keys, along with a back and menu buttons beneath the screen. The centerpiece includes a comfortable track ball, which is sharp in black. The right side of the handset features the volume rocker, microUSB and the 3.5mm audio jack. The top of the BlackBerry 8900 Curve hides two keys - one for locking the phone and the other for muting it.
The camera on the 8900 Curve is a delight as the phone sports a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash. The unit is protected under a glass cover in the rear. The camera interface is uncomfortable and to work with and there are no shortcuts on the screen to apply quick action. The camera offers basic settings such as white balance, color effects and image stabilization. The phone is able to record videos at 240 x 180 pixels and the quality of videos is below average.
On the multimedia front the phone has a top notch mp3 player capable of playing MP3, AAC/AAC+, WMA, DivX, Xvid, H.263 and more. The inclusion of the 3.5 mm jack makes it an added advantage on the phone. The player sorts the music library automatically by artist, album and genre and one can search tracks by gradually typing. Playlists can also be created on the phone.
The phone sports GPS and Wi-Fi along with full Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP fro streaming music to headphones. The handset also features the voice recognition. On the battery side the phone lives up to a huge six hours talk time and 19 days of standby. The phone also has a expandable memory slot which is upgradable to 16GB.
Overall the phone is a nice upgrade to the Curve lineup and does a good job. The phone as such is a perfect upgrade and a good by in the higher end segment.
