Design and Looks
The design of the phone is quite similar to the 8800 and features a sleek design with a silver finish. The phone is a little bigger than the Curve and stands at 114x66x14mm and weighs about 132g. Its hard to hold and takes time getting used to holding it in your palms.
The keyboard on the phone is a full 35 key QWERTY keyboard. The keys seemed to be packed in and are not spaced out which makes it difficult to use at times when you are in a hurry to finish your mail. The display on the phone is a TFT screen having a 2.5 inch in diagonal and capable of showing 65000 colors.
The resolution of the display stands at 320x240 pixels and has the capability to adjust its brightness according to ambient conditions available in the area. The trackball on the device is a 4 way trackball navigation which is a located between the display and the keyboard. The sensitivity of the trackball again can be adjusted according to the user's preference. The right side of the phone contains the volume rocker whereas the left side contains the 2.5mm headphone jack, the mini USB port and a user adjustable key.
The highlight of the BlackBerry 8830 is its dual band mode that supports both CDMA and GSM network on the go. The phone is set to provide voice coverage in 157 different countries. The phone also sports GPS technology. The receiver used is the SiRFstar3-LT, which is the same technology used in 8800.
On the multimedia front the phone has a decent music player able to almost all music formats such as MP3, WMA, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB and MIDI. The phone also can play videos and clips which are of MPEG4, WMV and H.263 formats.
The internal memory on the phone is 64MB and has a provision for expandable memory with the inclusion of the microSD slot.
There is support for EV-DO network which allows for high speed Internet access and does come in handy when you want to connect your laptop to the internet using the smart phone.
The phone is an ideal travel mate who would like to be in touch with their contacts at all times and also requires the smart phone features. It's a rugged and stable phone that provides a good stable performance on the business front and with decent multimedia features to add that little fun during work.
