Design and Looks
The BlackBerry 8820 features the standard bar form factor with squared edges. The phone stands at 114x66x14mm and weighs about 134g.
The phone sports a 2.4 inch display capable of displaying 320X240 pixels with 65,000 colours. It comes with trackball navigation and has a fully featured QWERTY keyboard. The display is able to adjust automatically its brightness levels depending upon the ambient light conditions existing in the area.
Around the trackball there are 4 keys present, starting with call and end keys, menu and the escape buttons. The keys on the QWERTY seem to be packed in without much space between each other. They are kind of slippery to hold on to but do the job well even for a non regular user.
The right side of the phone supports the up and down keys whereas the left side hosts the 2.5 millimeter headset jack , a mini USB port , and a convenience key.
RIM have targetted the phone as a business level handset with the exclusion of camera making it possible for people to work in corporate environments where there is always a ban on camera phones.
The newest feature on the phone and the highlight of this model has been the Wi-Fi which supports 802.11a/b/g. The enterprise security options available on the phone are WEP, WPA and VPN settings.
The media player onboard is able to play MP3s and various music formats with ease. Many of the formats supported are the MP3, WMA, AAC , AAC+ , eAAC+, AMR-NB and MIDI music files. The video formats supported by 8820 are the MPEG4, WMV and H.263 video formats. Playlist can be created as folders and shuffle and repeat songs within a certain folder. The player is able to display track information, such as title, artist and album art.
The phone is a quad band GSM with GPRS/EDGE support which makes it truly a world phone with good quality. The general performance on the phone seems to be fast and decent and does not add up to any delays. The Wi-Fi connection is fast and is able to connect soon enough.
The battery on the phone is able to last up to 5 hours of talk time and up to 22 days of standby time.
Overall the phone is all a Business version appealing the professional class. The lack of camera makes it a good choice for employees with no camera phones at their work places.
